IOU

I owe you tulips for the yard,

beneath the arbor vitae.

By the time your birthday arrived

they were gone from the garden centers,

and the women told me I should come back in the fall,

when bulbs will be there ready

to be planted for the spring.

It's a long time to wait, but I will buy them.
