Morning Prey
I saw the crescent moon with earthshine,
lying on its back and Venus pendant a handspan below.
My dog caught a ridiculous scent that pulled him
scrabbling for the neighbor's yard
straight toward the moon and planet.
I spun a story about coyotes running into the sky.
On the way home there were only streetlights,
but now I'm listening for sounds of trouble.
Thank God, when I run out of my office
he's only caught a ball.

I had a little trouble following this. I loved the imagery but when I read the last line I thought I must have misconstrued something. On the other hand, I recently bought a copy of the complete Crockett Johnson's Barnaby (I bet you haven't read all of those strips), and this reminded me a bit of Barnaby. So, maybe I was influenced by that?
